African Art, African Stories
February 2 - March 15, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 2, 6-8pm

An exhibition of African tribal art including works from Congo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Tanzania, Angola, Guinea, Cameroon and Nigeria, "African Art, African Stories," provides an introduction to various traditional art forms and materials. Many works date to the early 20th century, some earlier, with stories at times remarkable and unexpected, referencing the use of art within the society that created it. In addition to a variety of works created throughout the African continent, the exhibit explores perceptions of tribal-styled art made for export and foreign markets. Issues of value and authenticity are important contemporary considerations for many collectors and museums.

The exhibit includes a large Yoruba Beaded Altar Cloth and a Baule Mouse Oracle from the Ivory Coast. The Mouse Oracle is a wood vessel with two chambers, one for a mouse and one for straw. With the lid closed the mouse would feed on and rearrange the straw to be later "read" by a diviner in the Baule community to help resolve social issues.

This exhibit features works from the collections of Matt Scheiner and Lisa Qualls, and is funded by grants from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

African Art : African Stories and Gallery Jatad

My husband, Matthew Scheiner, and I will open our tribal art/contemporary works on paper gallery this coming year. Gallery Jatad will open in a three story space in the fall of 2012 near the corner of Chenevert and McGowen streets. This location is close to Sonja Roesch Gallery, Houston Museum of African American Culture, The Holocaust Museum, The Station Museum, The Buffalo Soldiers Museum, The Asia House and other arts and museum venues.

Before the gallery opens my husband and I will show selected objects from our tribal collection at O'Kane Gallery (Houston, TX) in February 2012. The exhibit African Art : African Stories is curated by Matt and gallery director Mark Cervenka. A grant from the Houston Arts Alliance funded the creation of a catalogue for the exhibit with beautiful photographs by Gabriella Nissen and text by Matthew Scheiner.

The exhibit opens February 2, 2012.

The Winter Group Show at Avis Frank was a beautiful show of seven of the gallery artists. The best way to describe it is sublime. The imagery was intellectual, subtle, thoughtful and powerful in a quiet way. Such a nice way to end 2011 and transition into a new year. And best of all I walked away with a beautiful sculpture by Patrick Renner!

Road Sign USA and Book Release

Four Lilys is up on Road Sign USA, an outdoor exhibit space designed by June Woest. The sign is located at the 4200 block of Bellaire Blvd in Houston, TX. The image will be up for about three months and will include a performance/installation piece at Little Woodrows next door at a date TBA. Running concurrently from December 8, 2011 to January 14, 2012 at Koelsch Gallery is the exhibit Absence.

Just published on Blurb is Absence the book. Regular copies of the book are available through Blurb. Limited editions of the book which will include a piece of original artwork and a handmade cover will be available at Koelsch Gallery after December 8th.

This body of work was made possible by the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance Fellowship Grant.

"Four Lilys"

The "Four Lilys" will go up on Road Sign USA November 15th (if it is not raining in the morning)! If you live in Houston and are driving down Bellaire look for it at the 4200 block of Bellaire Boulevard going east, next to Little Woodrows.

"Four Lilys" are four imagined portraits of my great-great-great-grandmother Lily.
Lily was born a slave on a plantation in Tennessee. There are no photographs of her so I have created 100 imagined portraits of Lily. Her history is part of my history and also part of the history of the southern United States. Our history is the history of humanity and the intersections of peoples.

Along with the image on Roadsign USA there will be a performance/installation called"Everyone is a Shade of Brown" by myself and Fredia Mitchell at a date TBA at Little Woodrows.

This Makonde Head is the first in a series of personal objects that I am drawing. This particular object was given to me as a Valentine present by my husband. Three years after visiting a gallery owner's apartment in Lisbon, Fernando remembered which piece was my favorite one and sent it to Matt. We are not sure if the Makonde head is from a staff or a fetish but the power of it's carving is obvious.

My goal is to draw 25-36 personal objects that I have collected over the last 30 years. Each object holds special power and significance for me.

Apama Mackey's Visual Stimulus Package III at G Gallery in Houston last weekend was great success. Every year the show gives people a chance to collect Houston artists at great prices: $50, $100 and $200. Looking forward to next year. We were lucky enough to get a Mari Omori drawing.

Above is my drawing "Small Aloe" from a series of 8 x 8" personal fetish objects. One of the four pieces of my work that was in the show.

Color is not only one of the most powerful means of expression available to the artist but is often the viewer’s most direct connection to an artwork. Color has the power to connect both artist and viewer to memories, smells, tastes and sensations in an immediate visceral manner.
This collection of artists use color in a wide spectrum of ways. The materials, style, surfaces and gestures enhance and compliment each artist’s use of color.

"Pinkie" and "Blueboy"

Inspiration

When I was 3 or 4 my mother bought small reproductions of “Pinkie” and “Blue Boy” by Thomas Lawrence and Thomas Gainsborough. I was so taken with those images that I decided then I wanted to be an artist. So in a funny way those charming and slightly syrupy paintings are the reason I am an artist. My taste has changed a little since then and I am more likely to be inspired by Irving Penn or Simone Martini now. Photography influences most of my work in one way or another. The use of black and white in both photography and drawing allows me to focus on creating forms with light and shadow. Beyond the form and the figure I am inspired by stories, histories and people. Maybe that is what drew me to “Pinkie” and “Blueboy” in the first place.

I did not know when I first saw those images that Pinkie was born in Jamaica and was the aunt of Elizabeth Barrett Browning and that she died of whooping cough a year after the painting was made. Or that Gainsborough dressed his sitter in early 17th Century clothing in order to pay homage to Van Dyck who influenced him. Both paintings were purchased by Henry Huntington and remain in his collection in California. This is why they became associated with each other and sometimes mistaken by visitors to be painted by the same person.

"Pinkie" and "Blue Boy" were painted in the late 1700's by English artists Thomas Lawrence and Thomas Gainsborough. This period in history is of particular interest to me because it so important to the beginning of the United States and also to the culture of southern United States.

Au Naturel, Astoria, OR

The drawing in the Au Naturel exhibit is one of the first small graphite drawings in my “Strawmen and Sugarbones” series. The friend who modeled for this drawing also modeled for “Salampasu Mask” a 48 x 36” drawing that I spoke about at the Menil Collection in Houston, TX as part of my talk about the African Collection there. The Salampasu mask is in their reserve room and I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to tour the room with curator Kristina Van Dyke and her assistant Mary Lambrakos who later wrote the introduction for my catalogue.
My long term goal is to create a body of work using tribal objects from all over the world, traditional and contemporary, from museum and private collections and to reanimate these objects. There are many reasons for creating this body of work. One is simply to share my appreciation for these objects and the human figure and to reconnect object and figure, through the act of drawing, looking and placing the image on a stage of space as I see things in my mind. Another is to share these objects, many of which are rarely seen by a wider public audience, and to breathe life into them again since they were made to be used, to be worn, to live. Other reasons develop as the work develops and I explore similarities of expression and visual markers from different cultures across the world. Cultures across the globe with no known communication or contact have created such similar visual objects and garments that it leaves me in awe of the way the humans worldwide and through time create similar iconic forms and patterns. Sometimes these similarities are haunting, other times humorous. My use of friends and family as models represent the everymans to emphasize a universal desire to live, to enjoy and to celebrate life. Their varied ethnic backgrounds as well as the many sources of the objects are meant to emphasize the universal humanity that I create work about.

Starting a new series of baby portraits. After a workshop at the Jung Center Houston on Emotional Skin, I have been thinking more and more about early life experiences and the beginning of developing identity and feelings of safety and belonging. Several of my friends have small babies and grandbabies. I will be creating a series of drawings of them. Just taking the photographs of the subjects and noticing their body language and moods is fascinating.

"Absence" is an homage to three women in my family. Women who in the mid-1800's and at the turn of that century married out of their ethnic groups. Women who probably in other people's eyes made no remarkable achievements, they were wives and mothers. They lived their lives quietly and other than their families left few traces of themselves for the world to remember.

They are women who I have been fascinated by ever since I heard their stories and what little I know about them I find to be heroic. They married outside of their ethnic groups, something that I imagine caused problems for them in many ways. Did they marry for love, to have a better life, security, stability? Whatever the reasons were they were surely meet with resistance from the outside world. How did they respond to that? Did they teach their children to love and accept who they were, to dream and achieve goals that were unattainable for them personally? Did they imagine that later generations would become doctors, engineers, teachers, writers, artists?

The series will include 300 imagined portraits, 100 of each woman and the generations between us. I am starting with my great-great-great grandmother. Anna Qualls, who was a slave on a plantation and married a son of the owner, a Quarles. Because of the reaction of the family the couple left the plantation and changed their name to Qualls. I am working on 100 imagined portraits of what Anna and the generations of women between us might have looked like. I think of her and her circumstances. There are many questions that I would like to ask her.

Anna, what did you dream about? What did you think of the world outside the plantation? Did you love the man you married or did you go with him to escape slavery? Did you imagine that one day a great-great-great granddaughter would wonder what you thought about, what songs you sang, what dreams you had? Did you know that you had the power to bring Europe and Africa together and create the future?

On Saturday, May 15th I will be teaching a coloring book workshop at the Jung Center Houston. Students will use their own images or images they have collected to create a book with 3 different kinds of papers that can be bound or kept in a box.

We will also play with different ways of painting and coloring the images and creating transfers to make patterns and layers of space in the images.

These Houston area artists are creating site specific installations for the second annual collaboration between Environmental Artists, Nature Discovery Center and Russ Pitman Park in Bellaire, Texas. The artists have a wide variety of expertise and will be responding to the native zones in the 4 acre preserve located near Bellaire Blvd.

A group of five artists from the US, England and Taiwan will be exhibiting work in "rock, scissors, paper" from October 29, 2009 to January 10, 2010. Opening October 29, 2009 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main St., Houston, TX.

The artists Claire Brewster, Renata Lucia, Inca Pan, Lisa Qualls and Wonil Suh all use printed commercial papers in their work. Maps, book pages, scraps of found papers are collaged, cut, folded, layered and sewn together in the illustrations, installations and sculptural pieces that these artists create.

Formalism reigns supreme in RAW, a three person show opening at the
University of Houston’s O’Kane Gallery (Downtown campus) August 27
through September 25 (reception: Thursday, August 27, 6-8 pm).
With an emphasis on classical technique these three Houston-based
artists combine symbolic metaphor with beautifully rendered pictorial
compositions that comment on modernity itself. Doug Casen brings a
lyrical eye to traditionally pedagogical content in his surrealist
creations based on various historical texts, literally and
figuratively. Mark Greenwalt derives his ideas from similar research
creating chimeras of fanciful imaginings with traditionally based
underpinnings that reference canonical sources based in art and
medicine. Lisa Qualls’ work explores cultural tropes and commonly held
stereotypes through a sensitive and practiced hand. Her works on Mylar
often read as stereoscopes creating a multifaceted interpretation of

Round 30 at Project Row Houses Closes on June 21

The jambalaya, cornbread and cake are gone! The cd's disappeared pretty quickly last Saturday. Sadly all of the Happenings are over and only two weeks of Round 30 at Project Row Houses are left. Thank you so much to everyone who visited and also all of you who sent me images or let me include your photo in the installation. I loved hearing stories from the visitors some of which are on the Clothesline Stories disc and will be available again this weekend, June 13 and 14th, until they are all gone.

If you have not visited "Spirit Level" at 2513 Holman you still have until Sunday, June 21st. Regular hours are Wed-Sun, 12-5 pm.

Spirit Level opening at Project Row Houses on March 28, 2009

Spirit Level

For me, the Shotgun House has always been the perfect symbol of home as it embodies the transitions of peoples and the intersections of cultures. It pays tribute to those who created this neighborhood as well as honoring new residents who evolve the neighborhood with new spirit and new memories creating a balance between the old and the new.
A spirit level helps masons and framers determine the plumb lines of a house in the way that people determine the physical and spiritual levels of a neighborhood and community. Spirit Level is inspired by this symbol of house and home, drawing images and forms from many decades to celebrate the neighborhoods and communities of Houston.

My installation, "Spirit Level", will be in the house sponsored by the Menil Foundation.

I am inviting visitors who have a connection to the Third Ward or the Houston at large community to email photos to me at lisa@lisaqualls.com if they would like to
participate in my installation in the house. I will be transferring images chosen from these photos to garments. The garments will be hung clothesline style in the house and sold at the end of the round in June, the proceeds benefiting the Young Mother's Program at Project Row Houses.

I will also be collecting stories about clotheslines and will set up some dates to record those stories at the house during the round as well as some other happenings at the house.

"Cross-Pollination" will feature my work and Lovie Olivia's work at College of the Mainland in Texas City, TX. The show runs from February 26 - April 7, 2009.

Cross-pollination is scientifically described as the process of transferring pollen from one plant to another to promote fertilization and fruition, often by insects and small birds. Cross-pollination aptly describes both Lovie Olivia’s and Lisa Qualls’ interests in the exchanges between European and African cultures.

The work in this show is about the exchange of language, customs, symbols, clothing and religious practices between two continents of peoples over hundreds of years. It is the outcome of historical research, and the discussions between the artists.

This piece was inspired by three women I spoke to who had just returned from Iraq. They clearly felt out of place working in retail stores after having been in a life and death every day situation for nearly a year in Iraq. They had a strong bond with the people they served with. They were trying to adapt to life in Texas with their families.

Catherine Colangelo at Lawndale Art Center

Catherine Colangelo’s show at Lawndale Art Center, 3 Months and 90 Days, is a nice balance to the conceptual minimal installations often shown at Lawndale. Catherine’s sophisticated use of simple materials gouache and paper present a different view of concept. The show documents 180 days in the artist’s life. Catherine does this not by using timed photos of her work environment or lists of thoughts and words, although some of these are incorporated into the paintings, but by small expressive paintings created one a day for 90 days and a large one every 30 days for 3 months.

At first glance the patterns and colors in the painting bring to mind wonderful references to Native American paintings on leather, Gustav Klimt’s painted textiles, Hundertwasser’s landscapes or Tibetan mandalas. Catherine’s work certainly relates well to various patterns from different cultures and time periods but Catherine has created a visual language all her own.

In the small pieces she incorporates words and thoughts from every day life into patterns with fluid lines and saturated depth. Iconic symbols are interwoven with her own symbolic landscapes and spaces. Text in the paintings, refer to objects in her house or daily thoughts and insecurities making the pieces very personal and universal at the same time.

The larger pieces are spiritual and meditative in a way that renews the viewer’s spirit. The lines and colors fold you in and out of spaces giving you a feeling that you have moved through time in a different plane.

Look at Catherine’s pieces long enough to get lost in the patterned landscapes and interiors you will return to the current moment with a different perspective.

If you are in Dallas, TX in July stop by the Janette Kennedy Gallery at 1409 S. Lamar St. The Lost and Found show will be in the gallery from July 2-31, 2008. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday, July 31, 6-8 pm. The gallery is open 10-6 during the week and through the front desk on weekends.

The pieces in the show explore the form of the suitcase as well as subject matter associated with the suitcase including adventure, smuggling, displacement and memories. Eight members of Alternate Image, a mixed-media collective, as well as six guest artists will show work ranging from photography to installations. The artists include members: Barbara Chadwick-Bland, Ann Hartley, Jason Kishell, Masumi Kataoka, Mari Omori, Lisa Qualls, Matthew Scheiner and Alyssa Wood.
