Current news. New work. New project.

The bimonthly Art and Lagniappes are coming to an end. They have been very interesting and productive. New discoveries about materials and techniques were made with each workshop.
In 2014 I will return to using the blog for my own art news and images except for occasional entries about workshops at Gallery Jatad or the Jung Center.
Three exhibits in December start tomorrow:
"The Familiar Wilderness" at Gallery Jatad in Houston, TX opens December 5th.
"50/250" at French & Michigan Gallery in San Antonio, TX opens December 7th.
"Art Spoken Here" at the Nave Museum in Victoria, TX opens December 19th.
Above: a detail from Twine and Shadows which is included in "The Familiar Wilderness" at Gallery Jatad, 1517 Blodgett St., Houston, TX 77004.

The Familiar Wilderness
Lisa Qualls has created a body of work called The Familiar Wilderness with the freshness of relived childhood memories. She portrays the world with awe and innocence, and we recall the excitement of discovering our world. The subjects, as promised by the title of the show, are familiar and include still life, portrait, and landscape. The drawing and painterly treatments while classically skilled are used to reinterpret classical styles through both Modernist and Postmodernist eyes.
To create this body of work, Qualls works both forwards and backwards. Typically she builds layers with increasing detail to create drawings and paintings that convey volume and an almost photographic quality. For the paintings in The Familiar Wilderness, Qualls layers from detail to abstraction. Using a photographic image as reference she creates a colored pencil drawing, then completely overlays the drawing with acrylic paint.
